Utility apps

Google Reader

Google Reader is an easy way to keep up with the blogs that interest you.No matter what computer you’re using, when you mark something as read,it will be marked as read everywhere.

If you’re used to using the web-based reader,I highly recommend trying out the mobile phone version on your Android-powered phone. The touch-based interface is very intuitive and easy to use.

If you’ve never used the web-based reader,on your computer go to http://www.google.com/ reader. From here you can add new RSS feeds and even organize your feeds into groups.

Note: To set up Google Reader and subscribe to feeds, you need to use your computer. You cannot subscribe to feeds from your phone.

After you’ve subscribed to a blog (or two,or three,or fifty),open the browser on your phone. While you’re looking at the Google search page, tap the Reader link at the top of the screen. You see all the unread items.

This view is good if you follow a small group of blogs. But if you follow too many and prefer to read them blog by blog, tap Feeds to see your subscribed blogs, rather than all the individual posts

Just tap a blog’s name to see a list of items that are currently unread from that blog.Tap the individual item to open and read it.

Google Docs

Google Docs,at http://docs.google.com,is an online competitor to Microsoft Office, OpenOffice, and the other desktop office-type applications.Google Docs lets you create spreadsheets, documents, and presentations and store them online so that you can access them anywhere. Also you can share those documents with other people using Google Docs for collaboration purposes.

The downside is that you can’t actually create documents on your phone;you can only read them.

The upside is that you can read documents on your phone, without having to copy them to your phone, just by loading Google Docs.

To get to the docs,in the browser tap More, and then tap Docs.If you weren’t already on the Google search page, just go to www.google.com by pressing the Menu button and tapping Go to URL.

If you’ve created some documents, spreadsheets, and so on.

Tap the item you want to open.As you can see from the last item in the list, some items might be shared.Suppose you’re working in a collaborative environment, and you want to see only the things you’ve created. You can tap Owned By Me at the top to see only your things, rather than everything you’ve gotten invitations to work with too.

Tasker

Tasker gets to the heart of what makes Android, well, Android—it allows you unrestricted freedom to do anything you want with your apps and your phone. After all, your phone should work for you! This app can add extra actions to your settings. With more than 100 actions available in 12 categories— and each action with its own custom- sizable set of parameters—it’s hard to believe how much functionality is crammed into one app.

Hoccer

Free
Version:  Art+Com Technologies

Hoccer is not only handy and conven- ient, but it’s also cool to use. You can share data, contacts, or whatever else you want by making gestures similar to throwing a frisbee. It’s like playing catch with information, and it’s fun and useful with this app. Whether you want to share a contact, picture, bookmark, or text, Hoccer is just right for a quick exchange of data. For example, a speaker at a con- ference could throw his contact details out to the audience, and people with this app could catch the information.
